How we keep scores honest
Your list, not ours.

The things people ask us most.
How is the score worked out?
Every food starts at 100. Each thing you avoid that’s on the label takes points off, and things you prefer, like organic or whole grain, add a few back. Change your list and every score changes with it.
What can I tell it to avoid?
Seed oils, added sugar, artificial sweeteners, sugar alcohols, artificial dyes, synthetic preservatives, emulsifiers and gums, carrageenan, nitrates, sulfites, natural and artificial flavors, gluten, dairy, soy, and additives banned in other countries. You can add any other ingredient by name, too.
How does it read a menu?
Take a photo of the menu. Vetta reads each dish and its likely ingredients, then scores every one against your list. Restaurants don’t print full recipes, so treat dish scores as a guide and ask your server when it matters.
Where does the food data come from?
Ingredient lists come from Open Food Facts and the USDA’s database of branded foods, about 2.4 million packaged foods in all. Supplement labels come from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database.
Does it work outside the US?
Yes. When a barcode isn’t in Vetta’s own catalog, it checks Open Food Facts, which lists products sold around the world. Coverage is deepest for foods sold in the US.
What happens to my data?
Your list stays on your phone. Scans are saved to an anonymous ID so the app can show your history, and photos are read by an AI model and not kept. The privacy policy has the details, including how to have it deleted.
Is this medical or allergy advice?
No. Vetta compares labels to the list you made. Recipes change and data can be out of date, so if you have an allergy, always check the pack yourself.
